TOEFL字彙-老鳥與菜鳥


在職場上,有剛畢業的菜鳥,也有工作經驗豐富的老鳥。
那菜鳥與老鳥的英文到底怎麼說呢?
我們現在就來看看!

Veteran (n.)

定義:
1.          someone who has been a soldier, sailor etc in a war
上過戰場的軍人與水手。
2.          someone who has had a lot of experience of a particular activity
對特定活動經驗豐富的人。

例句:
1.          There are lots of veterans retiring from Second World War.
2.          He is a veteran of political campaigns.

另外,經驗豐富相關的形容詞還有:

Experienced (adj.)

定義:
1.          possessing skills or knowledge because you have done something often or for a long time
長期從事某事而擁有的技巧與知識。
2.          Having had experience in an activity or in life in general
人生與工作經驗豐富。

例句:
1.          He is an experienced actor.
2.          She is very experienced in/at cooking.

接下來我們來看看菜鳥怎麼說?

Rookie (n.)

定義:
1.          Especially American English: someone who has just started doing a job and has little experience.
美式美語:特別指剛進公司,沒有工作經驗的新人。
2.          American English: someone who is in their first year of playing a professional sport.
美式美語:第一年打職業運動賽事的新人。

例句:
1.          Sally is a rookie. The other veterans keep teasing her.
2.          Although John was a rookie in NBA, he won the MVP.

Novice (n.)

定義:
1.          someone who has no experience in a skill, subject, or activity [= beginner]:
指初學者,沒有任何經驗與技巧的人。
2.          someone who has recently joined a religious group to become a        monk or nun
指加入宗教的修士與修女,也可以說是和尚和尼姑。

另外,經常有人會用freshman 這個字代表新鮮人,但注意喔!
freshman指的是第一年進高中或大學的學生,而不是職場上俗稱的菜鳥喔!
還有MBA的轉播,經常聽到fish的字,也是指球場上的菜鳥,是不是很有趣呢?
